By now, most of us have heard of “smart buildings” and “smart infrastructure.”
Now, the topic is getting a new name: “smart homes.”
The term refers to the growing number of buildings built using the technology of self-driving cars and other technology that is connected to the internet.
This is a major shift from the previous generation of buildings where a building could be connected to a computer and controlled by a human.
“It’s an entirely new concept,” said Benoit Mascarenhas, an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who is a co-author of the report, which is being released in conjunction with MIT’s Center for Architecture.
“The question is how to do it without creating a new class of buildings.”
A Smart Home?
Mascarelli and his colleagues have developed a computer program that can design and install a smart home.
The system then scans the landscape and learns the local conditions and provides the proper sensors to measure the temperature, humidity, and other variables that affect a building’s ability to withstand earthquakes and other hazards.
The computer can then analyze the data and come up with an architecture that can meet the building’s building code.
The researchers say that this system can be used for residential, commercial, and institutional buildings.
The team plans to test this architecture in a few months.
Building Standards in the Smart Home Landscape The report uses the term “smart” to mean that the software can be made more precise and flexible.
The software can predict where seismic activity is likely to occur and automatically design and build smart home prototypes.
Mascaresi said the program could be adapted to a range of building standards, such as the requirements of cities like San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and London, and the building codes of the United States.
“We are talking about smart buildings that can survive earthquakes,” he said.
“A smart house is not just a home that can withstand earthquakes.
It’s a home in which all of its parts are connected to all of the people, the environment, and everything else.”
A New Way of Building The report also outlines how the researchers are developing a new way of building smart homes, one that can handle the building code as well as earthquakes.
“This is not a new technology, it’s just a new system,” Mascarianhas said.
Building standards are a common part of building codes, but they are not the only building code to which the software is adaptable.
Building codes in other countries include building standards for fire codes, plumbing codes, and electrical codes.
The new software program can be adapted so that the system can respond to the building regulations.
Mavarelli said that he and his team are developing new software that could be used in other buildings.
“What is different is that we’re going to be able to do this in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Japan, and many other places,” he explained.
“That will allow us to go beyond building codes.”
Building Standards for the Smart City The researchers also outlined how they are developing smart buildings for cities that are more than 500,000 square kilometers (180,000 acres).
“We’ve got to be aware of our standards,” Mavaresi noted.
“They will have to be in line with our building codes in order to have an impact.”
The software is capable of adapting to all building codes and building design standards.
In the United Arab Emirates, the smart city initiative is being developed by the Dubai Smart City Association, a partnership between the Ministry of Transport and the Dubai Authority for Transport.
The UAE is home to the world’s largest airport, the world headquarters of the World Bank, and is a regional hub for the Gulf Cooperation Council, the regional organization that includes Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
The report notes that smart cities will also be able do better than their building codes when it comes to earthquake-resistant structures, such a fire-resistant roof, and water-resistant buildings.
Building Codes are a part of the building design code in many countries, but there is currently no way to easily change these building standards in real time.
Building design codes are a set of rules and guidelines that govern building design in a given region.
For example, a city that adopts a building code will need to follow certain building codes to achieve a certain level of protection.
In general, the guidelines say that buildings should be designed in such a way that they withstand earthquakes, but not so that they are “impractically” tall.
A building’s height will also need to be measured.
Building code inspectors will be able see if a building meets the building standards and they can then decide if the building complies with building codes.
“Building codes are important for all the things we do in our cities, but building codes have not been able to adapt to earthquakes and the changing landscape,” Mavei said.
